One of the problems with selecting and buying construction equipment and tools today, is that there are just so many of them. The problem you see, is that in real working conditions on the job they have to be accessible and ready to use, so space in your truck is the limiting factor.
Every Tradesman Needs a Circular Saw
18 Volt Reciprocating Saw
Now the standard circular saw has come a long way in just a few short decades, so new attachments and blade types mean that no matter what trade you're in you should probably get one. Even then, you have to decide on going cordless, or not, and what size suits you best.
New 18 volt lithium ion batteries mean that cordless tools now hold some three times the power which makes a huge difference, and also lithium ion batteries don't have the memory effect that tends to run down the storage capacity of nickel cadmiums.
Cut Just About Anything With a Saws-all
Another nice tool to look at no matter what trade you're in is a reciprocating saw, more commonly known as a saws-all. Once again, just like the circular saw, it's the new high tech blades and advancements in cordless models that make this versatile tool in particular so attractive.
In fact, it's hard to think of something that "can't be cut" with a saws-all and they even come in handy around the home too. They come in real handy for pruning trees around the yard and out in the garage for things like cutting off loose ends of metal and odd long bolts on mechanical jobs. These are also durable cutting tools that can really take a beating.
Palm Sanders Are Far Too Under-Rated
Now if you don't own a palm sander you have to ask yourself why. The reason being is that they are just so darned affordable today and once you own one you'll be surprised at how many uses they really have. Plus they're compact which makes them all the more handy to have around.
Palm sanders are of course fantastic for quick sanding jobs but they're also great for jobs like polishing, and cleaning. You read that right. In fact all you need is a simple green kitchen scrubbing pad to set a palm sander in to remove just about anything. Switch to a plain cotton cloth and it's now a polisher.
Take your palm sander to work to clean off crusty pipes, touch up wood surfaces, or to go over a plaster wall before painting. Then when you get back home use the same palm sander for cleaning even the most stubborn crud off of barbeques, and old motor parts.
Now they do vary widely in price, so keep that in mind when you head out shopping. Just the same though, do also keep in mind that palm sanders take a heck of a beating so don't expect a cheap model to last near as long as, say a nice quality built 0 model.
